Ariel Rubinstein (born April 13, 1951) is an Israeli citizen. He is a professor of economics at the School of Economics at Tel Aviv University and at the Department of Economics at New York University. Previously, he occupied a position at Princeton University, Department of Economics.
He has published a long list of articles, with a strong focus on Economic Theory, Bounded rationality and Game Theory. His paper "Perfect equilibrium in a bargaining model" (1982) is a milestone in bargaining theory. He has also written or edited eigth books, among which “A Course in Game Theory (1994)” with Martin J. Osborne, a popular textbook that can be found in libraries of any Economics department in the world.
His current or former editorial responsibilities include prestigious journal: Econometrica, The Journal of Economic Theory, The Review of Economic Studies, Mathematical Social Sciences, Economics of Philosophy, and many others.
Noticeable distinctions: member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (1995), Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the American Economic Association. In 1985 he was elected a fellow of the Econometric Society, and served as its president in 2004. In 2002, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Tilburg University. He has received the Bruno Prize (2000), the Israel Prize for economics (2002), the Nemmers Prize in Economics (2004), the EMET Prize (2006) and the Rothschild Prize (2010).
Keynote Lecture
"Back to Fundamentals: Decentralization without Prices"
Competitive equilibrium is a method of creating harmony using prices in an interactive situation with a feasibility restriction and self-interested agents. In the lecture, I will discuss three other related social institutions which might serve to "achieve the magic". Some related welfare issues will be discussed. The lecture will be based on Richter and Rubinstein (AER 2015) as well as two new projects, one in collaboration with Michael Richter and the other with Asher Wolinsky.
